Exploring the Rise of Golf in Fashion
So like most during the pandemic and in desperate need to be outside, I played more golf. It wasn't a new thing I picked up, I started playing when I was 10, but it was now something that became a bigger part of my life. I found more time to play and actually gave a shit about my handicap. At my older age I have more money like most of my streetwear crazed peers to spend on it…because my poor play is from my clubs, not me, haha. I had to shell out the money to have the newest kit, like the Kith x Taylormade Stealth Driver that to it’s credit has been worth every penny each time I stripe one. Plus, who wants to wear all that stuffy preppy garb.
The reason I write this post is because of two things I have seen, which is the launch of golf collections for Aime Leon Dore and Quadrant. These two brands are not rooted in golf, but have found ways to hop on the major trend. But first let’s talk about this Quadrant logo for their collection, which is basically a backwards Prince logo, 🤣🤣.
One could ask, is golf hitting its ceiling and reaching saturation? And I would say no. I would say golf is getting the recognition it deserves. I think the disruption is what is necessary for the sport to become commercial without the likes of a prolific player that transcends culture. There is no Tiger Woods right now. Yes he is still playing, but he is a shell of himself and not winning. So the broadening interest of golf through various consumer segments is doing that job. Seeing celebrities/athletes and streetwear brands embrace golf more, introduces it to a much wider audience. Golf is becoming more than a sport, it is a lifestyle and as long as good products continue to be made for that lifestyle, it will never go away.
